The Story of Slusser Ranch
“The valley of Sonoma, the land of promise, everything a human heart could ask for—gold—food in abundance—perfect climate—natural growing conditions with rich soil—truly the good Lord had smiled on them and placed the garden of Eden at their doorstep.”
—Eugene Slusser, our grandfather, writer, hop manager, farmer
We founded Slusser Ranch Vineyards to celebrate our magnificent parents, Peter and Joanne. They saved, worked tirelessly, and planted and cared for the vineyards. In the spirit of their entrepreneurialism, this limited production wine will help sustain the ranch. We want to share this wine with our friends.
We got lucky – our ancestors had an eye for good agricultural land. We are in the heart of the Russian River Valley, known for stand-out Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Zinfandel.
It is not common to be a 5th generation Sonoma County farming family, here since 1847. The road that winds its way to the Ranch is called “Slusser Road.” Long ago, it cut through the ranch and was named after our pioneer ancestors. The ranch was founded before California became a state.

The grapes love this location. The weather and soil are ideal. In the evening, the Pacific fog rolls in, refrigerating the grapes overnight. With the rising sun, the fog slowly burns away and the warm California sunshine breaks through. Over centuries, the Mark West Creek has brought minerals to the soil, creating rich agricultural land. Day after day, month after month, year after year, the weather and soil go to work to grow quality grapes.
Peter and Joanne, a knockout team, raised us to love this place. We grew up spending every summer here, a boisterous bunch. From running with the ranch dogs, picking blackberries to saddling up grumpy horses. From swimming in the chilly creek to painting picket fences, prune picking and watering the fruit trees. We loved working here. We still do.

When you drink this wine, you’ll taste the ranch. A distant flavor of apple and olive orchards, blackberries, hops and the creek’s minerals. A working ranch with cattle, horses and sheep grazing.
We are hard at work. This ranch will be here for generations because we farm carefully – treating the soil, our ranch team and water resources with respect.

“We are attached to our land. Like others, we have been in this area for generations. We have come to know this place as only farmers can. The soils, the groundwater, the flooding of Mark West Creek, the county road strategic property lines with the right angle turns and one lane bridges. We understand this land.”
—W. Peter Slusser, owner and manager of Slusser Ranch and Vineyards for over sixty years
